Gordon's Garden

Gordon’s Garden is part of our Childhood Obesity and Childhood Type II Diabetes program.   This  program designed to teach children about healthier eating and exercise.  Gordon’s Garden is a   pilot program that we hope will be used to teach children about the origin of their food, and to allow them to observe the relationships between plants, soil and insects. We believe these lessons will lead to an understanding and respect for all living systems as well as provide a venue to cultivate community with other students as they work together to plant, grow and harvest their fruits and vegetables.

We believe food creates a community.  Today we are two generations removed from having a relationship with where and how food is grown and family time spent together for meals.  we propose that this community garden program will offer renewed relationships and experiences for students to connect with their food, in its natural form, and to enjoy foods that are the most nutritious for growing bodies and for promoting life long health.  

The negative consequences of children who eat substantial quantities of processed and low nutritional food and who get little or no physical activity ore evidenced by the following:  
·  children who are overweight
·  children who are obese
·  children with Type II Diabetes
·  children with Sleep Apnea
·  children with low self esteem 

We believe that an innovative change to this pattern lies in teaching children to grow their own food and to eat those foods directly from the garden. The sensory experience of tasting foods in their most natural state engages all children on some level and can lead to a life-long commitment to nourishing their body through healthy food. 

We are committed to utilizing our partnerships and our creative abilities to forge a ground-breaking program where Gordon’s Garden will offer the setting that will integrate many disciplines, including math, reading, environmental studies, nutrition and health.  This interdisciplinary approach will nurture the talents and skills of all involved while providing children with opportunities to enrich their capabilities of observation and thinking
